Nikon has released firmware version 3.00 for its full-frame Z f camera, introducing a new in-camera Film Grain feature that blends vintage aesthetics with digital flexibility. The update—available free for all Z f users, including the new silver edition—expands the camera’s creative range while improving manual focus performance and workflow.
Film Grain for a Film-Like Look
This new mode simulates the organic texture of analog photography directly in-camera, adding realistic grain to both stills and video. Photographers can fine-tune grain size and intensity, and because each frame generates a unique grain pattern, every shot has its own analog character. When paired with Nikon’s downloadable Imaging Recipes from Nikon Imaging Cloud, the Z f can produce distinctive film-style color profiles straight out of camera—ideal for travel shooters who value immediacy and mood over post-processing.
Refined Focusing and Composition Tools
Firmware 3.00 also enhances manual focus by improving focus-peaking behavior and adding new grid overlays for both 4:3 and 9:16 compositions—useful for creators framing content for social media. A new [Maximum aperture Lv] option makes critical focus easier when using NIKKOR Z or legacy lenses.
Smarter Workflow Through the Cloud
Nikon Imaging Cloud now supports automatic firmware updates: once your Z f is connected, updates can download and install without a computer or memory card. The service also provides access to free Imaging Recipes, letting users customize their color looks in camera.
Additional refinements—such as improved monitor behavior, portrait-orientation video tagging, and optional electronic shutter sound—further polish the Z f experience.
For photographers drawn to tactile shooting with a classic aesthetic, firmware 3.00 makes the Nikon Z f an even more compelling travel companion.
