The giant pink shoe on Fremont Street in Las Vegas is called the Silver Slipper. This vintage neon sign once belonged to the Silver Slipper Casino, a famous casino that operated from the 1950s to the 1980s. The casino was known for its Old West theme and its glittering, oversized high-heeled shoe sign, which became an iconic part of the city’s neon history.

Today, the Silver Slipper sign is preserved as part of the Las Vegas Neon Sign Project, located in the Fremont East District. When the sign was originally atop the Silver Slipper Casino, it had a more muted, silvery appearance with white lights; however, when it was relocated to Fremont Street as a decorative art piece, it was given a bright pink makeover with neon and bulbs to make it fit the aesthetic of downtown Las Vegas. It sits atop a pole, paying homage to Vegas’ golden age of neon.

The best vantage point is from directly beneath the sign, or with a longer lens, from directly across the road — from anywhere else, you’ll get trees in the photo, or the shape of the shoe will be harder to discern. To photograph the shoe lit up, try to visit during twilight, so the lights will contrast against the deep blue color of the sky. Use a tripod to stabilize your shot.

The images featured here were shot early in the afternoon.

Address: 201 Fremont Street, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
